LADIES SUMMER AMAM 27TH JUNE 2024

What a fantastic day it was to gather friends for a delightful round of golf under the glorious sunshine! We had 80 enthusiastic ladies come together, forming teams of four, many of them proudly sporting team colours that made them easy to spot around the course.

Chris Harrison-Smith had the honour of seeing off the players from the 1st tee, while Javan Argent did the same from the 10th tee. Their cheerful banter set a joyful tone for the day. A big thank you to both gents for their lively send-offs!

Stephanie Crook did an amazing job organising the day. She ensured delicious cakes and refreshing beverages were waiting at the halfway houses and added a fun twist to the game by making the 18th hole an all-to-count. This certainly made us focus! A thank you goes out to our halfway house bakers and greeters—Ann Harrison-Smith, Helen Pollard, Janet Roberts, and Vivienne Swift—who rejuvenated us with their warm smiles and treats, giving us the energy boost we needed for the second half.

Margaret Middleton and Elspeth Irvine, our raffle queens, were in top form, raising an impressive £390. An additional £20 was collected from the halfway houses, all for this year’s charity, Friends of Stamford Hospital. Great job, ladies!

As we made our way back into the clubhouse, we were warmly greeted by the bar staff, ready to serve refreshing drinks to all the possibly dehydrated players. Their cheerful service was just what we needed after a challenging round. A huge thank you to the bar staff for keeping us hydrated and happy!

In addition to the drinks, the catering staff had prepared a delightful buffet of cold meats and fresh salads. The spread was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, providing the perfect post-game nourishment. Thank you for taking such great care of all the ladies!

This week, our greenkeepers had quite the task on their hands as the irrigation system failed, making the greens trickier than ever. A huge thank you to the team for all their hard work! With the greens being extra challenging, our balls had a mind of their own, rolling right off the back and making us rethink our usual strategies. Even with these hurdles, we still had some fantastic winners, which were checked by Drew Farrell. We are always grateful for the support from the Pro-Shop!

CHALLENGING MATCH AT GREETHAM FOR THE B TEAM

Janet Farrington, Mary Gates, Stephanie Crook,
Mel Griffiths, Barbara Newell, Carol Johnson
Bev Harpham and Lynn Collen

Great effort from the B Team in that heat but sadly Burghley lost 3-1. Well done to each and every player.

Never easy to play an “A” team on their own patch - particularly at Greetham. There were some very close matches.

BURGHLEY A TEAM TOPPLE TOFT

Jo Bell, Mel Griffiths, Sandy Bushby, Michelle Powell,
Kay Hircock, Gail Hunt, Helen Haynes and
Sue Churchill
The A Team had a tough match at home today against Toft - our old rivals! All the matches were very close. Helen, playing in her first A Team match with Michelle had a really tough match against Tofts first pair - Louise Bradley & Cathy Lee. Louise was on tremendous form chipping in from off the green and holing long putts. Sue and Sandy battled to come in with a very welcome half. Kay & Gail had a good match against Toft stalwarts, Lorraine & Mairead. There were 11 halves on the scorecard, but the match was won by an amazing chip in from the horrid rough on the 16th by Kay!! Mel and Jo came in with the final win, with another close tough match. The course was in fantastic condition, but both teams were a little troubled by shots into the green which bounded on further than we all expected!! Toft were very complimentary about the Burghley greens. Our return match takes place at Toft on the 5th July.

LADY CAPTAIN'S DAY AWAY

Kibworth Golf Club hosted a fantastic exchange day with us on Tuesday, May 21st, 2024, and it was a smashing success. 47 ladies came out to tackle the challenging course. Our fabulous Lady Captain Karen did a fantastic job organising the event. The day began bright and early, with Karen and Vivienne Swift providing a warm welcome to all the participants. They set the perfect tone by greeting everyone with a glass of champagne and a delightful selection of pastries.

A coach packed with 38 lively ladies, all joyfully catching up with each other, made its way to Kibworth. The narrow entrance road presented a challenge when a car and van, parked opposite each other, blocked the way. But no worries! Natalie Jones sprang into action, quickly finding the plumber and getting the van moved so they could reach the club. Thanks to her quick thinking, everyone arrived in time for a cuppa and to meet up with the ladies who had driven themselves. Bit of drama to kickstart the day!

Pete Collins, the ever-supportive husband of our lady captain, organised the teams for the day while Karen diligently prepared the cards. Thanks to Karen's attention to detail, we enjoyed full handicap allowances, which was a delightful relief given Kibworth's notably higher slope rating compared to Burghley! Her careful planning truly made all the difference and kept everyone in high spirits. Meanwhile, our Vice Captain, Michelle Powell, expertly managed the incoming cards, checking scores and keeping the leaderboard.

The Kibworth ladies gave us a playful hint about their course by leaving ball retrievers for each team. And boy, were they needed! The course featured ponds and ditches that even the best golfers found themselves navigating. It was fantastic to hear cheers as balls rolled into the holes on those fast greens. The camaraderie was noticeable, with teams sharing picnics and supplies to keep everyone energised. What a delightful day of golf and friendship!
